Avalanche Announce Affiliation With New Mexico Goatheads (2026)

Bold headline: A landmark alliance reshapes hockey development in the Southwest.

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club, together with the ECHL and the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles, announced today that the New Mexico Goatheads will join as the Avalanche’s ECHL affiliate starting with the 2026-27 season, in a multi-year deal.

The Goatheads are an expansion franchise set to play at the Rio Rancho Events Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. This marks the first time a professional hockey team has competed in New Mexico since the New Mexico Scorpions, who played from 1996-97 through 2004-05 and 2006-07 to 2008-09. The ECHL revealed plans to award an expansion club to Rio Rancho on May 2, 2025, and the franchise officially announced its name on September 29, 2025.

“The ECHL is a vital link in the Avalanche–Eagles player development pipeline, and we’re excited to formalize this multi-year partnership with the New Mexico Goatheads,” said Kevin McDonald, Avalanche Assistant General Manager and Eagles General Manager. “Our evaluation of the Albuquerque market was highly positive, and Rio Rancho will provide a robust setting for players to grow both on the ice and in their lives off the rink.”

“This partnership is about opportunity and growth,” stated Goatheads General Manager Jared Johnson. “Joining forces with the Avalanche on a multi-year agreement gives our players a clear development pathway while delivering top-tier hockey to our fans from day one.”

Historically, the Utah Grizzlies served as the Avalanche’s ECHL affiliate from 2018 to 2026. The club has maintained an ECHL link as a secondary affiliate in every season since 2014-15.

Among the Avalanche’s 2025-26 players, four have ECHL roots: Scott Wedgewood, Mackenzie Blackwood, Trent Miner, and Jack Ahcan. Head Coach Jared Bednar brings further ECHL pedigree, having played in the league at various points from 1993–98 and 1999–02, and coaching roles from 2002–09; Bednar is also a member of the ECHL Hall of Fame. Assistant Coach Nolan Pratt spent part of the 1995-96 season in the ECHL.

Controversy-ready note: Some readers may question whether relocating an ECHL affiliate to New Mexico will meaningfully impact development pipelines or market reach. Does this new association truly strengthen Colorado’s long-term player pool, or will it strain resources in another region?
