Forget the traditional career ladder. For Gen Z, the future of work looks more like a juggling act. Take Aashna Doshi, a Google software engineer who moonlights as a podcaster and social media content creator. "I'm never truly off the clock," she admits, "but it's about finding balance and pursuing my passions." Doshi's story isn't unique. A staggering 57% of Gen Z Americans have side hustles, compared to just 21% of Baby Boomers, according to a recent Harris Poll. But here's where it gets controversial: is this a sign of entrepreneurial spirit, or a desperate response to a crumbling job market?
The Rise of the Portfolio Career
Gen Z is ditching the idea of a single, all-consuming career. Instead, they're building portfolios of skills and experiences, using their day jobs for financial stability while pursuing their true passions on the side. "My side hustle is my creative outlet," says Doshi. "It allows me to express myself beyond my job title." This sentiment resonates with Sen Ho, a stationery store worker who creates digital illustrations in his spare time. "My side hustle keeps me grounded," he says. "It gives me a sense of purpose and accomplishment that my day job doesn't."
And this is the part most people miss: This shift isn't just about making extra cash. It's a reaction to a changing economic landscape. The traditional path to success – college degree, steady job – no longer guarantees financial security. "The job market is cooked," Doshi bluntly states. "Side hustles offer a safety net in an unpredictable economy."
The AI Factor: Opportunity or Threat?
The rise of generative AI adds another layer of complexity. While it opens doors for some, like Doshi leveraging it for content creation, it threatens others. Freelance illustrator Yeong Yuh Lee, recently laid off from her full-time job, relies on her side hustle to survive. "AI-generated art is undercutting human artists," she laments. "It's a constant struggle to find stable work."
The Cost of the Hustle
The side hustle life isn't without its drawbacks. Ho admits to feeling constantly on the clock, juggling his retail job with client outreach and social media promotion. "It's exhausting," he says, "but I can't imagine not drawing."
The Future of Work: A Corporate Reckoning?
This generational shift has implications for the entire workforce. Mark Valentino, Citizens Bank's president of business banking, predicts a future where "careers" become portfolios of experiences. "Companies need to adapt," he warns, "offering flexibility, purpose, and opportunities for growth to attract and retain young talent."
