Lucid Express 'Instant Comfort' Album Review: Shoegaze Bliss from Hong Kong (2026)

Lucid Express, "Instant Comfort": A Sonic Sanctuary

Lucid Express, the Hong Kong-based shoegaze band, has released their second album, "Instant Comfort", marking a significant evolution from their 2021 debut. This new record is a testament to their artistic growth, showcasing a more nuanced and atmospheric sound. The album is a blend of dream pop, ethereal vocals, and lush guitars, with a few intense, discordant moments that add depth and texture.

Recorded in the band's studio, an isolated haven in an industrial district, the album captures the essence of a retreat from the bustling city. Vocalist Kim Ho's airy and magnetic voice takes center stage, delivering whimsical and confessional lyrics. The early singles, "Something Blue" and "Faux Sweetness," showcase her ability to convey both tense longing and tender vulnerability.

The album's instrumentation is a complex web of guitar lines and layered synths, creating spacious and intertwining melodies. Subtle trip-hop elements are woven into some sections, adding a unique twist. The band also showcases intense, overdriven energy in tracks like "Setback," featuring raw and restless guitar solos.

Lucid Express's journey began as Thud in 2014, during the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong. They reformed as Lucid Express in 2021, embracing a more organic sound. "Instant Comfort" sees them move further away from their synth-pop roots, embracing a fuzzier and more atmospheric style. The album's production, handled by Kurt Feldman, highlights Ho's vocals and the intricate details of each instrument.

The drums, in particular, are given a full and balanced treatment, anchoring the swirling arrangements with clarity and power. The songs have ample space to breathe and swell, allowing sounds to linger. The album's closing track, "Instant Comfort," offers a graceful exit, starting slow and decaying into a reverb-laden haze. It's a dense and hypnotic experience, ending with an amplifier click, leaving a lasting impression.

"Instant Comfort" is a rich and immersive experience, best appreciated live and loud. Lucid Express is set to embark on a second North America tour in March, including appearances at New Colossus Festival and South by Southwest. This album is a luminous showcase of their unique sound, capturing the band's energy and detail with warmth and clarity.
