Prepare to be amazed by the Geely EX2, a Chinese EV sensation that's about to hit the UK roads! But here's the kicker: this adorable electric vehicle costs a mere £7,000 in China, and you'll soon be able to get your hands on one in the UK by 2026.
The EX2, also known as the Geome Xingyuan, has already conquered the Chinese market, becoming the best-selling car in China in 2025. Now, it's ready to take on the UK, giving established players like the Renault 5 and BYD Dolphin a run for their money. Despite its popularity, it might be a car you've never heard of, which is surprising considering its impressive sales figures.
In the last months of 2025, around 50,000 EX2s were sold in China, which is astonishing when compared to the UK's best-selling car, the Ford Puma, which sold just over 50,000 units in an entire year. And it doesn't stop there; the EX2 is also the second-best selling EV globally, right after the Tesla Model Y. Its success is undeniable, and its impact is about to reach the UK shores.
We got a sneak peek at Geely's HQ in Linhai, China, and the EX2 left a strong first impression. For a car that sells for such a low price in its home market, the EX2 is surprisingly well-equipped and spacious. It's a compact car, slightly larger than the Renault 5 or Vauxhall Corsa, and it comes in two variants in China.
The base model features a 30kWh battery and a 79hp electric motor, offering a range of 193 miles on a single charge. The more premium version boasts a 40kWh battery and a 116hp motor, extending the range to 255 miles. However, these figures are based on Chinese testing protocols, which are more lenient than the WLTP standard used in Europe. Realistically, UK range estimates would be around 150 and 200 miles, respectively, and even lower in real-world conditions.
Initially, the UK market will likely see the introduction of the larger battery model, but if priced competitively, the cheaper variant could offer a more spacious option compared to the BYD Dolphin Surf or Dacia Spring. With a charging rate of 160kW, the EX2 is set to impress, although specific charging times are yet to be disclosed.
The EX2's design is a blend of modern and retro elements. It bears a resemblance to the GWM Ora 03, with smooth lines, a dual-tone paint job, and expressive headlights. The interior is where the EX2 truly shines. It offers ample space, comfortably accommodating tall passengers, outdoing the Renault 5 and Vauxhall Corsa Electric in this regard. The flat floor and a 375-litre boot, comparable to a VW Golf, provide a sense of practicality. Plus, a 70-litre frunk offers extra storage for charging cables.
The dashboard is stylish, featuring city skyline graphics illuminated by ambient lighting, and the center console and door cards are upholstered in artificial leather for a premium feel. The infotainment system, shared with the Geely EX5 SUV, is responsive but could benefit from a more streamlined menu structure.
As for pricing in the UK, the £7,000 price tag won't be replicated, but Geely aims to offer excellent value. A starting price of around £16,000 is expected, depending on the battery and motor options offered. This raises the question: will the EX2 be a game-changer in the budget EV segment? With its impressive sales in China, it certainly has the potential to make a splash.
And this is where you come in! Are you ready to embrace the Geely EX2 as a potential contender in the UK market? Do you think it will disrupt the established budget EV scene? Share your thoughts and let's spark a conversation about this exciting new arrival!
